BACKGROUND

PROVINCIAL HERITAGE FAIRS PROGRAMME  HOW IS SPONSORSHIP ACKNOWLEDGED?

ABOUT HERITAGE FAIRS

The Heritage Fairs Programme celebrates Canadian history and culture through projects presented to the public, across Canada, by students in Grades 4 through 9. The Programme was previously supported nationally by History, a non profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Canadian heritage.  In 2009 the national program is restructuring and up to the minute information can be found at www.heritagefairs.ca

In Newfoundland and Labrador many schools hold Fairs and select representatives to participate in 1 of 8 Regional Fairs across the province with thousands of students participating in the program annually. Their projects, which range from personal family histories to major Newfoundland and Labrador and Canadian historyl events, reach over 40,000 people each year. Heritage groups also showcase their work at the Regional Fairs.

We are hoping to re-establish the national heritage camps in 2011.  If that happens each Regional Fair then selects 1 or 2 students (there are 15 from across the province) to represent them at the National Heritage Camp held each July in a different province.

OVERVIEW

  • Annual Regional Fairs are held across Canada on the second weekend of May.
  • Young people, schools, community organizations and businesses join together in telling stories and sharing information about Canadian history and heroes.
  • Presentations by students from Grades 4 to 9 are registered for adjudication and put on display for the public.
  • Local Heritage groups present workshops, storytelling and demonstrations for the participants and for the general public.
  • As a culmination of the Regional Fair Program the national program sponsors 15 students from each province and 5 from each territory (165 students in all) to represent the Regional Fairs at a week long “History Camp” held in July.
  • In 1997, all 10 provinces participated in the Heritage Fairs Programme.
  • In 1997, Newfoundland held its first Heritage Fair on the Avalon Peninsula.
  • In 1998, there were 7 Regional Heritage Fairs in Newfoundland and Labrador. They were located in St. John’s, Clarenville, Marystown, Grand Falls, Corner Brook, Labrador City and Goose Bay.
  • In 1999, the Heritage Fairs became truly national in scope when 10 provinces and 3 territories participated.
  • In 2001, the Northern Peninsula/ Labrador South area joined the Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Fairs Programme
  • In 2002, Newfoundland and Labrador hosted the National Heritage Camp in St. John’s, July 8-15.
  • In 2007, Newfoundland and Labrador celebrated its 10th year in the Heritage Fairs Programme.

PROVINCIAL HERITAGE FAIRS PROGRAM

The Provincial Heritage Fairs Programme is under the auspices of the Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland and Labrador. A Provincial Steering Committee oversees the eight Regional Fairs and acts as liaison with History. The Steering Committee includes representatives from the following:

  • Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Parks Canada
  • Memorial University of Newfoundland CDLI
  • Department of Tourism, Recreation, and Culture
  • Department of Education
  • Heritage Fair Alumni
  • Association of Heritage Industries
  • Native Friendship Centre
  • Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Provincial Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Newfoundland and Labrador Historyl Society

To maintain the Fairs Programme, the Steering Committee seeks funding from interested sponsors. Our hope is that the corporate community and provincial organizations committed to the life and culture of our province and to the children of the province will support this imaginative and worthwhile venture.

HOW IS SPONSORSHIP ACKNOWLEDGED?

The Steering Committee recognizes donor support at the Fairs and through provincial publicity materials, advertisements, press releases, on site literature, brochures and other publicity materials. The Committee works with donors to develop other recognition that fulfills the goals of the Corporation.
